Getting Assistance
Great deal of Assistance is surely needed
Morale supporters, Police, Lawyers
but finding one who will help you
may never be a harder life task.

The first thing you need to do is make a police report of your loss in the fraud attack. Have a copy of your diary and all evidence emails or correspondence ready to hand over to the right detective when you find him. Finding him may be another story. Since my case had players in Quebec and Japan I expected that provincial police or RCMP would be the ones to deal with it. Even though this may be an international fraud, the most likely place where your report to police is going to be well received is in the most local jurisdiction of Police in your area. They may not be able to reach out of the province but at least local fraud detectives have jurisdictional responsibility to you and will listen and more importantly offer knowledge you need.

When fraud stuck my life, I didn't have any prior experience telling me what to do. I went from place to place looking for help to put the pieces together. I first thought my bank and its manager would be totally prepared to help save the money and get the crooks but they were only interested in holding me responsible. I was turned away from quite a few police sources that I expected to be chomping on the bit to get a case with hot leads direct to the suspect before I found one, who was actually willing to consider my case, and share the knowledge on this subject I sorely needed. Finding such assistance is a very frustrating task.

At a pivotal moment in my history soon after I learned I was up to my ears in a case of fraud and while the scammer believed that I was still a viable victim I had an opportunity, through a business trip to Montreal, to meet with one of the criminals who had set me up. Friends and family were adamant that is was too dangerous for me to go alone. Ontario Provincial Police refused to believe the fraudster would meet with me, and declared such a sting attempt would be a waste of time. Toronto Fraud Detectives from my jurisdiction who would preside over my case if it were a criminal charge said they would be very willing to go in my place, if only it were in Ontario. When I got to Montreal I went to the Montreal police and fully explained my case and how I needed their help but they were not interested whatsoever in following up on a crime in Ontario. While I stood there in the station they called the RCMP for me and the response was equally uninterested. The RCMP officer on the phone said it was already 2.00pm on Friday and they were going home soon for the weekend and they saw their role in this as only aiding the Montreal police as interpreter with me. On prior agreement with my wife, I did not follow through alone with this potential to nab the crook but the crook later phoned me to complain and ask why I stood him up for our "business" meeting because he did not yet know the jig was up. It was a viable chance to catch the criminal and I was frustrated that I could not interest the police in the task of capturing a criminal that I was handing to them on a platter.

I previously spoke of why there is such a lack of police interest in the apparent nonviolent supposedly victimless crime. It is frustrating and unfortunate but I have found that there is a valued movement towards prevention that is just as important as aiding victims of fraud after the fact. This movement is toward educating Canadians about fraud schemes so they may never fall into the clutches of professional criminals. The Ontario Provincial Police PhoneBusters.ca website is an example of this prevention approach but this task force is only mandated with data collection and publication. It offers no real help to existing victims of fraud. As a matter of fact, when I realized that going to the head of this unit, the most knowledgeable police on fraud for help, did not and would not yield the support I expected I became angered. From childhood we are told if you have a problem go to the police, and now when I needed help the most, I was more than let down when initial conversations only served to further verbally malign me as an implicated coconspirator of the crime of fraud. My anger only subsided when I spoke with my MPP and I realized that the government confirmed the mandate of PhoneBusters.ca was not as an investigative unit. They are merely an intelligence gathering unit, supporting public education. It is very important for us to report our victimization to them but to do so without expectation that this report will illicit any direct help in return from this communication.

Don't give up your search for police assistance! I believe in the old adage that the squeaky wheel gets the oil. There are individual officials out there who are interested in helping a victim and the police work of capturing the crook but they are hard to find. I do believe those police officers posted to fraud divisions are working diligently on the mountain of cases in their own jurisdiction that is on their desk. If you are lucky and find a police officer or other government agent, who wants to work with your file, give that person all the information that you can give. These people are so over worked that anything that you can offer that would save them time, which will be appreciated and may lead to a n early break in the case. Also, remember not to filter raw information, that little something, which you feel is not important, might be the very clue that they need to associate with other material they may have to get these "criminals." We have to work with all sources to stop fraud.

Get Legal Assistance! You are not a criminal but you may be facing a criminal charge. Therefore, don't dally around, seek a criminal lawyer for this because others may not be as sure of such details as may surround fraud. At the very least you need to know your rights and where you stand amid all the details of the fraud you've been drawn into. Many lawyers offer a special rate for a short consulting. Find this and use it. Some may even offer a free initial counsel meeting to determine if you need their expertise. This is even better. You need a legal mind to review all the facts and express a legal opinion of where you stand.

There is no better tonic for your life or your self-esteem as when a criminal lawyer leans over their desk to tell you, you don't need me, there is no criminal case against you here!
