What Police Need from You
If you have never paid attention to details
now is the time to get fastidious because
like a computer the garbage you put in
is the value of the garbage you get out!

As quickly as you become aware that you have been involved in a fraud, you need to contact the police in the jurisdiction of your home and report what has happened to you. Do not delay because if other co-victims like a bank manager contact the authorities first, it does you no favour. Protect yourself by being first to report the crime.

Generally, the police specific details to assist in the investigation. While some evidence like correspondence with a crook may be forwarded to police, do not transmit personal data over the internet due to potential interception of data for Identity theft. You want to give the police as much assistance as you possibly can to capture the scammers. Fraud investigation units are always understaffed which makes fraud detectives very busy people. Make his work day as easy as you can by being organized . Have everything complete for police to review. You want him working on your side and not against you. You need him as an ally.

Plan to meet your local fraud detective in person to provide your report of fraud in written form. Create a printed document with personal details like your name, your address, your phone number, etc. Next write a detailed description statement outlining the sequence of events surrounding the fraud in chronological order. I suggested this earlier as making a chronological journal or diary of all events with references to any correspondence or evidence you are able to gather. Police need to know how you, the victim, was first contacted, and how you corresponded with the fraudster, and places you may have physically met with the suspect. Any other valuable information you may remember such as vehicles used and if any references made by the suspect that may lead to determining their true identity or location.

Fraud is an intelligent crime, wielding the power of knowledge over unsuspecting citizens. Likewise, the tools to defend yourself and fight Fraudsters is Intelligence Gathering! Sometimes these tiny pieces of information that seem insignificant can associate the same fraudster to other victims of similar frauds that have been reported. Make it clear and total. Include every detail that can you remember. Nothing is too insignificant to share with police because only police may decide what is relevant. Something, which you might feel is a very minor item, could be the clue that can get the police to solve the problem. The fraud people might have a pattern that the police can recognize.

Now it all depends on how meticulous about details you can become, just to find the little items that will benefit you in your case.
